2018 West Coast Picnic, Portland OR

The Annual West Coast Reunion for 2018 again took place at Cathy Pettinari's and Karl Holmes' home in Portland, Oregon August  24-26 and was another three day feast.  This year, before the Reunion, Roger King, Karl Kindel, his wife Carrol and friend Paul Cullingford (from Jamaica, who many of you have met), took a trip to meet with John Reitz in Bellingham and then with Rob Waldron at his farm on San Juan Island in Washington state.

We had a lovely afternoon on the waterfront with John and a day and a half with Rob on his farm and a guided tour, hosted by Rob, of San Juan Island.  He also organized a luncheon with his friends, Jeanie and Bob Pfister, who were 1969 Forestry Volunteers in Chile and who live on Stuart Island, just off of San Juan Island.

Rob Waldron also sent along a lot of (his farm-produced) lamb sausage, which was consumed greedily by many on Friday night in Portland, all of us thinking of him.  He said that he would attend next year.

You will see photos of our time with John Reitz and with Rob Waldron in this set of photos

The first nine photos are from the Friday night get together where Karl Holmes prepared porotos granados, local bratwurst and the wonderful lamb sausage (provided by Rob Waldron from his farm on San Juan Island), plus two types of pebre--one onion based and the other tomato based.  Along with a little Chilean wine, it was a wonderful feast.

Then on Saturday (the rest of the photos), Karl Holmes smoked a pork shoulder and a beef brisket, made several salads (including Ensalada Chilena), porotos granados  and tasty corn bread for the main course of the Asado.  Roger King, as tradition dictated, prepared the Pisco Sours to start, along with the Empanadas Chilenas that served as the first course. Karl finished the meal with traditional flan.  Some wine was also consumed during and after the meal.  Conversation went well into the night.

On Sunday (no photos), we had the traditional egg souffle from Carol King's recipe along with mimosas and Karl's house-made muffins.  A wonderful finale to a great weekend.

The last set of photos are of our time with John Reitz and then Rob Waldron.
